What is bilty? Bilty meaning in transport

A bilty confirms that a road transporter has received a stated number of packages from a sender and agreed to carry them to a named receiver. A typical bilty shows the consignor and consignee, the goods, packages and weight, the route, the truck number, the freight terms, and a bilty number and date. For every field, with a sample PDF of the real BilToz LR, see the lorry receipt and bilty format.

One document, several names

NameWhat it means
Bilty, bilti, builtyThe everyday trade word, in three spellings. It is not an abbreviation.
LRShort for lorry receipt, as in LR copy or LR number.
GRShort for goods receipt, printed by some transporters instead of LR. Not the same as a warehouse goods receipt note (GRN).
Consignment noteA more formal name for the same receipt.

LR full form in transport: what is a lorry receipt?

The LR full form in transport and logistics is lorry receipt. So what is LR in transport? The same document as a bilty: the transporter's receipt for goods taken on for a road journey. It is the sender's record that the goods left their hands, the receiver's document for taking delivery, and the transporter's reference for billing freight and settling any shortage or damage question.

A bill of lading is the similar document usually associated with sea shipments; lorry receipt is the term used for road transport in India.

Who issues a bilty, and when?

The transporter issues the bilty: a transport company, a fleet owner or its booking office. It is made when the goods are accepted or loaded, before the truck leaves. As general practice:

  1. The consignor hands over the goods, usually with its invoice or delivery challan.
  2. The transporter counts the packages, fills in and numbers the bilty, and signs it.
  3. Copies go to the sender, with the truck and to the transporter's office.
  4. At delivery, the consignee checks the packages and signs; that signed copy is commonly kept as proof of delivery (POD).

Some transporters also add a document fee, often shown as bilty charges or LR charges. Whether it applies, and how much, varies by transporter.

LR copy meaning: what is an LR copy?

In everyday use, LR copy (lorry receipt copy) means one of two things.

One of the printed copies

An LR is made in several copies, usually for the consignor, the consignee, the driver and the office, so each party holds its own evidence of the same consignment. The guide to LR copies explains who keeps which.

A photo or PDF sent as proof of dispatch

When a buyer asks a supplier to send the LR copy, they usually mean a photo, scan or PDF of the lorry receipt. It shows the goods were handed to a transporter, and gives the LR number and the transporter's name for following up on delivery. With online LR and bilty software such as BilToz, you download the LR as a PDF and send that instead of photographing a carbon copy.

Bilty number and LR number meaning

A bilty number (bilti no, LR number or LR no) is the serial number printed on each bilty. One number means one consignment, so it is quoted wherever that load comes up later: on the transport bill, the proof of delivery and party payments. The e-way bill form also has a field for the transport document number, where the LR number is commonly entered.

Why it must be unique: if two bilties shared a number, a payment, POD or shortage claim could be matched to the wrong load. Numbers are unique only within a transporter's own series, so they are quoted with the transporter's name. In a bilty book, keep any spoiled leaf marked cancelled so the series has no gap.

Checking goods by bilty number: contact the transporter that issued it, because only that transporter knows where the goods are. If you are the transporter, BilToz numbers your LRs automatically, and its SIM-based truck tracking gives location updates every 15 minutes through the driver's SIM, once the driver consents by OTP.

Bilty meaning in Hindi: बिल्टी क्या है?

बिल्टी को एलआर या लॉरी रसीद भी कहते हैं। यह वह रसीद है जो ट्रांसपोर्टर माल को ढुलाई के लिए लेते समय देता है। इसमें माल भेजने वाले और माल पाने वाले के नाम, माल का विवरण, पैकेज या वज़न, कहाँ से कहाँ तक, गाड़ी नंबर और भाड़ा लिखा होता है।

In English: a bilty is also called an LR or lorry receipt: the receipt a transporter gives when it takes goods for carriage, with the parties, goods, packages or weight, route, vehicle number and freight.

In English: every bilty has its own number, called the bilty number or LR number. An LR copy means one copy of the bilty. A bilty and an e-way bill are separate documents; when an e-way bill is required depends on GST rules, so confirm with your CA.

Bilty vs e-way bill vs transport bill

A bilty and an e-way bill often relate to the same consignment and quote each other's numbers, so they are easily mixed up. In general terms:

PointBilty / LRE-way bill
What it isThe transporter's receipt for goods accepted for carriageA GST document for the movement of goods
Where it is madeBilty book or transport softwareThe government e-way bill portal
WhenWhen the transporter accepts the goodsBefore the goods move, where the rules require one

Bilty and e-way bill: when an e-way bill is needed, and who generates it, depends on GST rules and the parties' GST registration, so confirm with your CA. In BilToz you can enter the e-way bill number on the LR; BilToz does not generate or file e-way bills.

Bilty and transport bill: one bilty covers one consignment and is made at booking. The transport bill, or freight bill, comes later to collect payment and can list several bilty numbers. See the transport bill format with GST.

Make bilty and LRs online

If you issue bilty every day, you can make them online with BilToz instead of a bilty book, free during the launch period. The steps are in how to create an LR online, and transport billing software covers GST invoice PDFs and party payments.
